Neighborhood

Nob Hill is home to some of the grandest mansions and most historic hotels in San Francisco.
The top of the hill became accessible in the 1870’s by the addition of cable cars that climb up California Street from the north waterfront through the heart of the neighborhood. Nob Hill is considered the center of old San Francisco, where even today descendants of some of the original founding families of San Francisco maintain a residence or membership at venerable private clubs. Mostly destroyed in the fire of 1906, Nob Hill remains one of the most prestigious, convenient and central San Francisco addresses. Old money as well as new tech wealth plus recently arrived diverse cultures reside, entertain or have businesses here.
Huntington Park is certainly the heart of the community. Many enjoy congregating in the park to rest following a hike up the hill. There is also a children's playground which is second to none.  And, it is home to the iconic 10-foot Fountain of Tortoises, a replica of the same in Rome, donated by the Crocker family.

A spiritual center can be found within the impressive stone architecture of Grace Cathedral, formerly the site of the Crocker mansion before the fire and earthquake. A liberal bastion, it administers an array of social justice programs and brings inspiration through a number of musical concerts and events hosted throughout the year. Also on the grounds is an outdoor meditation labyrinth. Visitors may traverse the garden in silence as part of a meditative reflection of their own lives and the lives of others.

The neighborhood remains a very walkable area despite its steep streets and is an urban oasis for residents while never being too far from the action of downtown. Perfectly situated, it is bounded by the excitement of Chinatown, the nightlife of Polk Street, and the upscale shopping of Union Square. Nob Hill is a stroll from the financial district. But, for those not interested in walking at the end of the day, MUNI provides monthly cable car passes. Now that is traveling in style!
